About Sulapac

Materials

  • Sulapac®
Sulapac® is a bio-based material whose main components are wood and plant-based binders.

Eco Benefits of the Materials

  • The biodegradable plant-based binders and wood in Sulapac originate from sustainably managed forests.
  • Sulapac® can be digested by microorganisms in nature, without harming them or the environment.
  • During its decomposition, no permanent microplastics are left behind.
  • The material biodegrades in open environments into water, carbon dioxide, and biomass.
  • Sulapac® does not contain animal products or by-products. It’s development and testing does not involve animals.

Process

  • Sulapac does not contribute to deforestation because the wood chips and wood flour come from industrial and agricultural side streams. This promotes circularity.
  • The GMO-free raw materials are approved according to EU standards for food-contact.
  • Sulapac® can be manufactured and processed with existing plastic product machinery, making it practical and resource efficient.
  • The company uses accredited, third-party test laboratories, as well as scientific articles, to verify that they meet European standards in product development, processing, and manufacturing.

Story

Biochemists Suvi Haimi and Laura Tirkkonen-Rajasalo wanted to find a solution to the growing number of single use plastics polluting the planet. In 2016, they successfully created the biomaterial called Sulapac®. It is a sustainable alternative to plastic; an innovative material that is elegant, functional, and fully biodegrades without leaving any microplastic behind.
